Next Mobile Broadband Baseline 21Mb

The maximum speed available from mobile broadband connection has been an issue that has received a lot of attention recently. With discussions about future LTE technology and concerns about the capability of existing network to handle increasing demand, the question of speed and performance of broadband services is one that is bound to gather a lot of interest.

In July this year, the Global mobile Suppliers Association, more commonly known as the GSA, brought out a report that the baseline speed for mobile broadband services is somewhere around 7.2 Mb. The figure was arrived at after an analysis of worldwide mobile broadband systems, and was determined by the fact that half of all commercial HSPA are able to offer this speed even during peak usage times. This speed is also supported by a number of devices that are broadband compatible.

It is a fact that users hardly ever experience the speeds which are advertised by providers. However, users are eager to know what the next big step will be in this sector. The GSA has conducted a survey to find out where broadband is headed next. The report entitled ‘Mobile Broadband - The Next Baseline’ took into consideration the views of network operators, manufacturers and suppliers to arrive at the conclusion that the next mobile broadband baseline will touch 21Mb once the HSPA+ technology is launched.

The survey also showed that users are concerned about other features of their broadband service too and not just the speed. There is a definite public trend to view all aspects of a mobile broadband service (like customer care, grievance redressal etc) as important factors in judging the quality of a service.
